GHB Diamond Jubilee Cup: GCC, GCC Elite, Hikers secure wins as action continues

Hikers Captain Robert France (green) and Old Fort’s Yonnick Norton both registered braces in a 3-3 draw

Hikers’ Women, GCC Men and GCC Elite were among the latest winners in the Guyana Hockey Board’s Diamond Jubilee Cup when the action resumed at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Saturday.
In the women’s division, Hikers began the day’s play with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Old Fort Inferno.
Hikers Captain Kenisha Wills opened the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute while Ariel Adams extended their tally in the 21st minute.
That clash was followed by a battle between GCC and Saints in the Men’s Division, in which GCC came out on top 4-1.
GCC began their dominance with a strike off the stick of Aldo Melendez in the 11th minute. By the 20th, Fredrico Cush made it a 2-0 affair. Two minutes later, Dwayne Scott found the net to further extend GCC’s lead. Lucas Sargeant then capped off their goalscoring with a strike in the 37th minute.
However, GCC were unable to keep their scoresheet unblemished as Saints’ Shakeem Fausette netted in the 51st minute to pull one back for his side.
GCC Elite later showed their experience with a 7-0 drubbing of Saints in a lopsided women’s encounter.

Abosaide Cadogan scores for GCC with a perfectly placed deflection

Princess Wilkie got the scoring started in just the fourth minute to send an early signal to Saints. Abosaide Cadogan later hit back-to-back goals in the 21st and 29th minutes, pushing GCC Elite’s tally to 3-0. Amariah Sahadeo then found the back of the net in the 30th minute to hand GCC Elite a 4-0 lead at the half.
In the second segment, Sahadeo returned to extend her tally with a strike in the 35th minute. Rebecca Ferreira netted in the 37th minute while Gabriella Xavier brought up their seventh unanswered goal in the 55th minute for another dominant win in the competition.
The day’s proceedings ended with an entertaining 3-3 draw between Pepsi Hikers and Old Fort Top Form.
Old Fort struck first, through Shaquan Favorite in the 10th minute. It took Pepsi Hikers eight minutes to respond through Captain Robert France. France struck again in the 35th minute to hand his side the lead while Shan Samuels added to Pepsi Hikers’ tally as they took a 3-1 lead. However, a brace from Yonnick Norton ensured that Old Fort would walk away with some points, netting in the 45th and 52nd minutes to seal the 3-3 draw.
The GHB’s Diamond Jubilee Cup will continue today at the same venue with the finals in both men’s and women’s divisions to be contested. The action is expected to serve off at 18:30h.
