Gillette Evolution’s trio conquer Powerade race

Team Gillette Evolution’s remarkable rise in local cycling continued in emphatic fashion on Sunday when they club has a 1-2-3 finish in the Powerade road race on the West Demerara roadways.

Last year’s leading senior rider Orville Hinds emerged the winner of the 45-mile race, clocking one hour, 21 minutes, 22 seconds (01h: 21m: 22s). He was followed by club mates Akeem Wilkinson and Marlon Williams in that order.

The race started in front of Wales Police Station with 39 riders, proceeded to Schoonard, turned left into the newly built access road to La Parfaite Harmonie, turned at the junction on the same road, proceeded back to the Schoonard public road, travelled to Leonora, where the riders will made the final turn and headed to the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.

Linden Bauxite Flyers’ Shaquille Agard finished fourth, Team Alanis Christopher Griffith fifth and another Team Gillette Evolution rider, Stephen Fernandes, ended sixth.

Wilkinson won five of the eight prime prizes on offer, while Williams had two and Junior Niles one.

By virtue of his finish, Fernandes was the leading veteran rider, followed by Jude Bentley and Raymond Newton.

The junior category was won by Deeraj Garbarran ahead of Christopher Cornelius in second and Raphael Leung third, while Keon Thomas won the Mountain Bike race from second place Julio Melville and Wayne Nurse third.
