Goed Fortuin cyclist killed, driver detained

A speeding car collided with a bicycle resulting in the death of a Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, man. Albert Shivdyal, 58, was killed on the Public Road of his village when the driver of PNN 7289 struck him.
Reports are the accident occurred just before 22:00h Saturday. According to Police the car, “was proceeding north along the western driveway at a fast rate, while the cyclist was proceeding in the said direction but on the eastern side of the road.”
Eyewitnesses explained that the cyclist was struck after he had crossed the road from east to west into the path of the speeding vehicle. The man was picked up by ranks of a Police patrol and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, according to Police, a breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the car got no trace of blood alcohol.
However, preliminary investigations revealed that a breaking distance of 126 feet from the point of impact was observed. The driver was taken into custody as Police investigations continue.
