Golden Jaguars stay perfect against Cayman Islands

CONCACAF Nations League…

Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Football team, the Golden Jaguars, took the lead at the top of Group A in the CONCACAF Nations League B, following a composed 2-0 victory over Cayman Islands on Sunday.
Playing at Windsor Park Stadium in Roseau, Dominica, Head Coach Marco Bonofiglio’s starting XI read XI Goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, Jalen Jones, Nathan Moriah- Welsh, Nathan Ferguson, Rashaun Ritch, Terrence Vancooten, Elliot Bonds, Liam Gordon, Isaiah Jones, Osaze de Rosario and Omari Glasgow.
The 2-0 result was not quite reflective of the Golden Jaguars’ commanding performance as finishing hampered the national team greatly.
There were flashes as early as the first minute of the game as De Rosario turned beautifully to take an early shot that went wide of goal. While Isaiah Jones also had an unsuccessful shot on goal, De Rosario again, tried to slot the ball home at the far post but had it going just wide for another missed opportunity.
Guyana finally had their breakthrough in the 15th minute, off a play set up by Omari Glasgow. The Beterverwagting native, at the top of the box, threaded the Cayman defence at just the right time, finding a pressing Liam Gordon going forward. Gordon sent the left- footed shot into the opposite corner of the goal for Guyana’s first strike.

Glasgow was the facilitator once again, when Guyana pushed their lead to 2-0, 20 minutes later. The Guyanese #10, this time, executed the press into the box, sending a shot with his left across the face of the goal. D Rosario, also making the press on the opposing side was perfectly positioned to slot the ball home at last post for the second strike.
With the 2-0 lead at the half, it seemed as though the golden Jaguars were finally fluent with their goal scoring but it was not to be.
Captain Bonds, receiving a pass inside the 1-yeard box had his shot at goal h=blocked by the Cayman Islands’ defence while another Glasgow cross in front of goal found no one home in the 62nd.
Omari took matters into his own hands 3 minutes later, taking on the Cayman’s keeper, trying to go through his legs for the 3rd strike but the substitute keeper, Deshawn Whittaker did well to get his boot on the shot, denying the Golden Jaguars #10.
Darron Niles, coming into the came in the second half, also suffered the same fate, with his shot at the goal going high in the 89th.
The Golden Jaguars will now depart Dominica on a positive note and head to Puerto Rico for two more matches in this international window. Those matches are scheduled for October 1 and 4.
The Golden Jaguars were drawn in Group A of League B, alongside Puerto Rico, Dominica and the Cayman Islands.
If the Golden Jaguars are to top their group, they will advance to the league’s championship to compete for the title of League B Champions and seal promotion to League A. In addition, those top four teams [group winners] will directly qualify for the 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup, while the two best group runners-up will secure a spot in the 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup Prelims.
