Government Electrical Inspector to determine cause of fire

Diamond Secondary fire

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is yet to make a pronouncement on the cause of the fire which gutted a section of the Diamond Secondary School earlier this week.
GFS Fire Prevention Officer Andrew Holder told Guyana Times on Thursday that they would have wrapped up their investigation, but have been awaiting confirmation from the Government Electrical Inspector so as to determine the cause of the fire.
“I am awaiting some information from the Government Electrical Inspector. We were both on the scene. I have concluded my aspect of the investigation and I’m waiting on him to say whether he found anything that would suggest that it is electrical,” said Holder.
The fire of unknown origin destroyed the administrative section of the school.
Persons living in close proximity to the school were awakened by screams of fire after the security guard at the facility noticed the flames.

Reports are the guard noticed flames emanating from the front building in the compound about 02:00h and immediately raised an alarm. With the assistance of public-spirited citizens, the fire was contained before fire-fighters arrived at the scene.
The Education Ministry stated that the fire began in the administrative building, which housed the head teacher’s and deputy head teacher’s offices along with the computer laboratory and the library.
According to the Ministry, checks were made by the GFS to ascertain whether there was a power surge affecting that area before the blaze and it was found that there was no issue with the electricity supply.
Regional officials were then engaged to cater for the smooth operation of the school when it reopens.
