“Government on board will help us build golf”– Hussain

Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) President Aleem Hussain said the commitment shown by Social Cohesion Minister with responsibility for sport, Dr George Norton to the golfing fraternity would help to unlock different levels going forward.

Speaking with Guyana Times Sport on Tuesday, Hussain confirmed Minister Norton, who recently visited the LGC’s course which is under development, was impressed by the state of the greens as well as the infrastructural works which are part of the lavish transformation billed for the Club before the end of 2018. Hussain said that the Minister was adamant about getting more schools involved in golf, as the moves to include schools in the Guyana Open Cup tournament as well as the University of Guyana Golf Programme, have been opening wider dimensions for the sport. As a result, Minister Norton is in full support of the LGC’s plan to launch a mini-tournament and golf training programme for at least 10 schools, tentatively set for the first or second week of May.
The idea, according to Hussain, will help to strengthen the bond between golf and students, who have been coming out more in recent months to be part of the sport. Minister Norton has been a strong supporter of schools and students getting involved in golf, as it helps to nurture and relax one’s mind.
“This allows us to build a market for the future because having the Government on board will help us to reach and build golf from a junior level and eventually help us to find players for the future,” Hussain noted.
Also, contestants of the Miss Guyana World pageant will be using the LGC as the venue for their sport pieces for this year’s pageant. Meanwhile, the LGC is preparing for a double-header this coming weekend, with the Muneshwers Open billed for Saturday and the Ganesh Spare Parts Open set for Sunday. (Clifton Ross)
