Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) has raised concern over the increasing number of vehicular accidents involving its electricity infrastructure following another crash in Kitty, Georgetown, on Tuesday afternoon.
The latest incident occurred at about 15:30h and involved motor lorry GAD 5037 and motor car PAL 9858.
According to GPL, the collision damaged its electricity network and resulted in a service interruption affecting sections of Kitty between Queen Street and Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.
No one was severely injured in the incident. However, GPL said the downing of power lines posed a potential risk of serious injury or death to the persons involved as well as members of the public.
The company said such accidents not only create safety hazards but also damage critical electricity infrastructure, result in repair and replacement costs, and disrupt service to customers.
GPL urged motorists to exercise greater caution when driving, particularly in areas where electrical infrastructure is located.
According to the power company, once the circumstances of the accident have been established, it will take the necessary steps to recover the costs associated with repairing or replacing the damaged infrastructure.
