Police take road safety, positive behaviour lessons to schools, youths

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) continued its community outreach efforts over the past three days, engaging children and young people in road safety, discipline, education and positive behaviour. On Tuesday, ranks from the Annai Police Station conducted an educational lecture for 18 students and three teachers of the Aranaputa Nursery School, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). The session addressed bullying prevention, safe walking practices and the importance of using the right side of the road. Students were also taught kerb drill and safe road-crossing practices, as well as the importance of wearing safety helmets.
The ranks advised students to wear white or light-coloured clothing at night to improve visibility and reminded them that pedal cycles should be equipped with bells, brakes and lights. The children were also encouraged to obey their parents and teachers. A similar initiative was held on Monday when Police ranks conducted a road safety lecture for 22 students and five teachers of the South Amelia’s Ward Nursery School, Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice).

Themed “Careful Driving Saves Lives,” the session covered the roles and responsibilities of police officers, police appointments and equipment, including batons and handcuffs. The children were also taught about kerb drill, traffic light signals, pedestrian crossings and safety precautions when travelling in motor vehicles. Guidance was also provided on the safe use of pedal cycles and the equipment required for them. Students were encouraged to respect their teachers and apply the safety lessons discussed during the session. Meanwhile, Regional Police Division #6, through its #2 Sub-Division, continued its youth outreach activities on Sunday, September 20, with a Youth Group Activity at the Hogtown Ball Field in Fryish Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Some 150 youths and residents participated in games, motivational talks and interactions with police ranks. During the engagement, the youths were encouraged to attend school regularly, study diligently, remain disciplined and recognise the importance of education in building a positive future.
As part of the activity, 150 hampers containing school supplies were distributed, while snacks were also provided. The GPF said the outreaches are part of its ongoing community engagement efforts aimed at promoting safety, discipline, education and responsible behaviour among young people while strengthening relationships between police and communities.
