GSL births international training opportunities for local athletes

The ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) T20 is not just offering opportunities to players on the cricket field and has even grown to benefit those outside of the discipline.
According to Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr, the league has now become the catalyst for overseas training opportunities for athletes involved in both cricket and football.
This is as a result of talks with team owners from the GSL which will result in overseas breaks for young players at Manchester United and Lahore Qalandars.
Ramson Jr divulged at the opening of a sport seminar on Thursday morning, “Yesterday, we were able to meet with the owners of Manchester United, who also had a team in the Global Super League, and we’re working out right now an exchange arrangement where we could take some of our players to Manchester United and for them to have some of the coaches down here.”
Turning his attention to the sport of cricket, the Minister announced the establishment of a similar initiative.
“Just a few days ago, we were trying to tie this up last year with one of the other teams from the Global Super League, which is the Lahore Qalandars; he has offered for us to send our cricketers to Lahore, free of charge for a camp, for six weeks for the players that we select on an ongoing basis, because they have an academy there,” the Minister disclosed.
“We were able to do that for free, just by virtue of having them play in the Global Super League.”
Ramson Jr went on to add about that particular partnership, “And then, he has offered because they have their Premier League; just like the IPL, they have a similar version in Pakistan, very big as well. He’s also offered for two players to be on their team for that league, based on the persons that we identify. That’s another huge accomplishment and achievement for us.”
Manchester United and Desert Vipers owner Avi Glazer was in Guyana on Tuesday night to watch his team take on the Perth Scorchers in the ExxonMobil Guyana GSL.
He also had meetings with President Dr Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, in addition to visiting the Kaieteur Falls.
