The national basketball club championship popularly called the ‘Road to Mecca’ continues tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and promises two pulsating matches with the Plaisance Guardians looking to rebound from a disappointing loss last Friday when they crumbled against the Victory Valley Royals.
This time around they will face 2015 champions the Pacesetters. The current team (Pacesetters) has looked a solid outfit in their first game and is a combination of youth and experience. However, the Guardians are a balanced team and will look to youth players Akeem Crandon and Nigel Bowen to take charge and make an impact while the duo’s senior counterparts Trenton Woolford and Nicolas Cassius will be looking to prove that they can help the Guardians to the finals.
While the Plaisance Guardians will face Pacesetters, Linden based team Half Mile Bulls will clash with Berbicians Rose Hall Jammers.
In their first game the Bulls suffered a loss to the Bounty Colts but they will take heart in the fact that Dillon Pellew and Jeffrey LaRose both looked in good form scoring 21 and 19 points respectively. Meanwhile their opponents, the Jammers are coming off of a narrow victory on the opening night against Dyna’s Ravens. The Jammers won that game 64-60 with impressive performances from National youth player Shemar France leading the way with 17 points, he was ably supported by Michael King and Kwesi Mickle. The trio will be looking to transfer their form from that game as the tournament continues.
Following tonight’s games, the tournament will continue on Friday with another double header as Bounty Colts look to ward off the Amelia Ward Jets and the Victory Valley Royals do battle with Retrieve Raiders.
Tonight’s first game will begin at 19:00h with the second slated for 21:00h at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The tournament is organized by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation and admission is free.
