Guinness “Greatest of the Streets”: National glory on the line as Cultural Centre tarmac set to ignite

The stage is set for what is anticipated to be one of the biggest nights in the history of the Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” competition when the National Championship explodes into action today, Friday, May 8th, at the National Cultural Centre tarmac in Georgetown.
Featuring champion teams from Georgetown, Linden, Berbice, Essequibo, Bartica, and the East Bank/West Demerara corridor, the highly anticipated tournament will determine the ultimate street football king of Guyana in a winner-takes-all showdown packed with intensity, rivalry, and national pride.
With a massive $1,000,000 first prize on the line, teams are expected to leave everything on the asphalt in pursuit of national supremacy. The runner-up will pocket $400,000, while the third- and fourth-place finishers will receive $200,000 and $100,000, respectively.
The evening is expected to attract one of the largest crowds ever witnessed at the championship, with supporters from across the country anticipated to descend on the venue for an unforgettable atmosphere synonymous with the Guinness brand of street football.
The action will commence with quarter-final clashes beginning at 19:00h. Opening the tournament will be a compelling encounter between Georgetown representative Bent Street B and Linden powerhouse Swag Entertainment. Bent Street B will enter the fixture aiming to use home support to their advantage, while the Linden unit is expected to bring its trademark physical and aggressive style.
The second quarter-final at 19:45 pits Berbice champion Ballers United against the dangerous Supenaam All-Stars from Essequibo in what is anticipated to be one of the most technically gifted contests of the night. Both sides possess explosive attacking talent and have been among the standout teams during their respective regional championships.
At 20:30h, Ballers Empire from the East Bank/West Demerara district will oppose Georgetown outfit Island All-Stars. Ballers Empire has developed a reputation for disciplined defensive play coupled with rapid counterattacks, while Island All-Stars are known for flair, creativity, and quick ball movement.
The final quarter-final fixture at 21:15h will feature another heavyweight showdown as Georgetown giant Leopold Street battles Bartica champion Might Ruler. Leopold Street’s pedigree in the competition is well documented, but Might Ruler has proven throughout the tournament circuit that it possesses the quality and resilience to upset any opponent.
Following an intermission, the semi-final round will commence at 22:00h with the winner of quarter-final one facing the victor of quarter-final three. The second semi-final at 22:45h will feature the winners of quarter-finals two and four.
The tournament will then move into the decisive stage with the third-place playoff scheduled for 23:30h, before the championship final kicks off at 00:15h in what is expected to be a dramatic conclusion to the national competition.
Apart from the lucrative prize purse and championship bragging rights, the event represents the pinnacle of community street football in Guyana, showcasing the depth of talent that continues to emerge from every corner of the country.
