CONCACAF’s road to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ reached an important milestone, as the draw for the qualifying competition took place at the Home of FIFA on Wednesday, and 35 teams participated.
There, the Guyana Senior Men’s National Team learned their fate for the Road to the World Cup.
Coming out of Pot Three with Grenada, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Belize, Guyana was eventually drawn in Group F, with a number of other Caribbean counterparts, during the FIFA draw hosted in Zurich, Switzerland.
Group F consists of Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, St Kitts and Nevis, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
The first round of qualifying will be played between the member associations ranked 6th to 35th in their region based on the FIFA Ranking from 16 July 2020. At the end of the first round, the six group winners will move into the second round to compete for a place at the finals. Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Honduras have already qualified directly for the third round.
The first objective of the draw is to group all 30 teams together with the six seeded teams to whittle the field down to six. Those six group winners will play a home-and-away playoff to determine who advances to the decisive Final Round.
After 14 qualifying matches, the top three teams from the final group will qualify for the 2022 World Cup, with the fourth-place finisher advancing to an intercontinental playoff with a region yet to be determined.
The eight qualified teams will be compiled into one pot, while positions 1-8 will occupy the other.
Each team will be assigned a designated position, via the draw, which would correlate to a pre-determined numerical schedule.
