President Dr Irfaan Ali on Sunday said that the invaluable service of the Guyana Red Cross is deeply felt by families all across the country. The Head of State made these remarks in his message to commemorate World Red Cross Month 2026. Ali, who is a Patron of the Guyana Red Cross, this observance offers an important opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary humanitarian work carried by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement across the globe and here at home in Guyana.
“Here in Guyana, the Guyana Red Cross continues to perform invaluable service to our people through programmes and interventions that often take place without fanfare, but whose impact is deeply felt by countless families across our nation,” the Guyanese Leader stated. According to the Head of State, the Meals on Wheels programme, its longstanding support for the Children’s Convalescent Home, its First aid and CPR training programmes, and its many other initiatives reflect the enduring spirit of volunteerism and benevolence that define the Guyana Red Cross.
President Ali used the opportunity to extend sincere appreciation to the staff, volunteers, donors, and supporters, whose commitment continues to sustain this noble institution. “Your work embodies the very best of humanity,” he said. In wishing the Guyana Red Cross continued success in its vital work while also reaffirming his support for the humanitarian mission, the Guyanese Leader sounded a call for increase support for the organisation. “I also take this opportunity to encourage all Guyanese, including members of corporate Guyana, to give generously and to support the work of the Guyana Red Cross. By doing so, we strengthen an organisation whose mission is rooted in service,” the President stated. Beyond Guyana, Ali noted that in every corner of the world where conflict erupts, where disasters strike, where communities are displaced, and where human suffering threatens hope itself, the Red Cross and Red Crescent stand as symbols of compassion and humanity. Whether responding to earthquakes, floods, famine, war, or health emergencies, he noted that the movement has consistently demonstrated that even in the darkest moments, kindness and service can prevail.
President Ali pointed out that the work of the Red Cross transcends times of war and catastrophe, adding that it is also found in the quiet, consistent acts of care that uplift vulnerable individuals and strengthen communities every single day. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the world’s largest humanitarian network, dedicated to protecting life and health, operating in nearly every country with 191 National Societies. In Guyana, this non-profit organisation is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable people. The Guyana Red Cross’ actions are guided by seven fundamental principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Voluntary Service, Independence, Unity, and Universality.
Through the Guyana Red Cross Society, a range of services are provided in regions across the country, addressing both immediate and long-term needs. These include emergency shelter, food and medicine, water and sanitation, restoring family contact for disaster victims, disaster preparedness, community-based health and care, first-aid training and activities, control and prevention of disease, HIV/AIDS prevention, blood donor recruitment, youth and volunteer activities, etc.
