Guyana’s men’s relay teams were eliminated from the World U20 Championships on Saturday in Oregon, USA, but the 4×400-metre quartet provided a major highlight by establishing a new national Under-20 record.
Tishawn Easton, Dejuan Grant, Skylar Charles and Malachi Austin combined for a time of 3:10.93, placing fifth in Heat One of the men’s 4x400m.
Easton completed his leg in 47.46 seconds, Grant recorded 48.54, Charles ran 49.54 and Austin anchored the team with its fastest split of 45.39.
Botswana won the heat in a season-best 3:08.22, with France second in 3:08.28 and Germany third in a season-best 3:08.88. Those three teams secured automatic advancement.
Sri Lanka finished fourth in 3:09.68, while Mexico followed Guyana in sixth place with 3:11.15.
Earlier, Guyana placed seventh in Heat Two of the men’s 4x100m relay after clocking 41.11 seconds.
The team comprised Ezekiel Millington, Gordon Ezekiel Thompson, Dequan Farrell and Onesi Dunn. Millington ran the opening leg in 11.24 seconds, Thompson recorded 10.17, Farrell completed his leg in 10.20 and Dunn anchored in 9.50.
Trinidad and Tobago won the heat in a season-best 39.40 seconds, ahead of South Africa, which also produced a season-best time of 39.86. Czechia placed third in 40.30, followed by Ireland in 40.39.
The Slovak Republic established a national Under-20 record of 40.53 to finish fifth, while India placed sixth in 41.01.
Despite failing to progress in either event, Guyana ended its relay appearances with a new national junior mark in the 4x400m.
