Guyana-Venezuela boundary marker located in Region 1

Ranks of a joint patrol on Thursday last stumbled upon a landmark in Region One (Barima-Waini) which confirms the boundaries of the border existing between Guyana and Venezuela.

This discovery was made by a group of officers attached to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) during regular rounds in the Amakura River in Region One.

The patrol, which was led by Sergeant Herschel Gilead, who, along with ranks of the coastal battalion and the GPF, was at the time deployed to establish a Joint Services presence in the White Water Village/Amakura area.
The patrol members are all based in the Maburuma area, and have been conducting regular joint patrols in Region One, with the aim of ensuring the safety of residents of various communities within the Region.
According to a statement by the GDF, the boundary marker serves to define the border between Guyana and its neighbour to the North-West, and is believed to have been erected during the border demarcation exercise conducted by the British Government during the 1900s after the border was unanimously settled in 1899 by an international tribunal Venezuela had caused to be convened and whose ruling all parties agreed to accept.
