The Ministry of Public Works on Wednesday welcomed the newest addition to its fleet – the Kalliopi N, a 2024-model roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel built in Greece to boost transport services to Region One (Barima-Waini). Subject Minister Bishop Juan Edghill, accompanied by Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) General Manager Yolanda Hughes, Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) Director General Captain Stephen Thomas, and other T&HD officials, toured the 50-metre vessel at the Kingston Goods Wharf in Georgetown.

In a statement on the Ministry’s social media post, Edghill disclosed that the vessel will be assigned to ply the Region One route, noting, “This is another promise delivered by the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) Irfaan Ali-led Administration. The President himself will do the commissioning at the appropriate time, which will be shortly, and will include the commissioning of the boat and three wharves: the New Kingston Goods Wharf with a new terminal building; the Mabaruma Wharf with the fantastic new terminal building; as well as the new Manawarin Wharf and new facilities,” the statement added.
Expressing his satisfaction with the continuous growth of the T&HD fleet, Edghill highlighted that the Region One route will now be serviced by four vessels, significantly improving transport and connectivity for the people of the North-West District. Just back in January, Guyana received a 2024-built vessel also procured from Greece. The vessel was a key addition to the country’s national fleet, primarily providing services to Region One.
It is equipped with three Hyundai engines and two generators and currently offers seating for around 284 passengers.
It can transport up to 51 cars or the equivalent of 14 trucks and operates at about 10 to 12 knots, significantly reducing travel time on the Georgetown-Region One route, particularly in calmer coastal waters.
