Guyana’s chess players experience best day with 5 wins
In what can be described as ‘the best day for Guyana’ at the International Chess Federation’s (FIDE’s) World Youth and Cadet World Cup, there were 5 wins across two rounds in one day.
The Under-18 boys were able to register 5 points for Guyana with round-three victories for Under-18 player Keron Sandiford over Adian Mart of the Bahamas and Oluwadare Oyeyipo over Shamir Martin of Jamaica.
In Round 4, Under-18 player Akili Theophil of the University of Guyana enjoyed a victory against Pablo Gonzalez Lopez of Puerto Rico, and the Queen’s College Under-16 player Kishan Puran defeated Chung Hei Au of Hong Kong, while his schoolmate and fellow Under-16 player Raveon Adonis got the better of Luyepo Sautio of Zambia.
Under-12 female competitor Anaya Lall is still to register a win.
World Youth and Cadet World Cup is an online tournament catering to countries worldwide. The tournament takes on the 10-Round Swiss format, and has been running category by category since August 5.
The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) has prepared and sent 22 young local players to the tournament in 5 categories, namely: Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18. The GCF’s “Chess in Schools” programme, which FIDE supports, has been credited for the success of the students thus far.
