Guyanese pugilist dominant on opening night

Caribbean Boxing Championships in St Lucia
Guyanese boxers Light Welterweight Colin “Superman” Lewis and lightweight Joel “Stone” Williamson along with bantamweight Keevin Allicock started the Caribbean Boxing Championships in St Lucia on a winning note at the opening night on Wednesday.
Despite Guyana almost not being able to send a team to St Lucia due to financial constraints, they a proving their worth.

A six-man team inclusive of a coach, a referee/judge and four boxers landed on the island on Wednesday and saw three of the Guyanese pugilists in action the same night. Keevion Allicock beat his Grenadian opponent while Lewis and Williamson recorded victories against Barbadians. All three victories came via stoppages within the distance.
In an exclusive sit down with Guyana Times Sport Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) President Steve Ninvalle disclosed that Guyana’s chances of retaining the overall title at the championships in St Lucia will be severely dented as the four boxers are nowhere enough to push Guyana for the overall win.
However the Guyanese team which includes Middleweight Desmond ‘Dynamite’ Amsterdam, bantamweight ‘Lightning’ Keevin Allicock, Light Welterweight Colin “Superman” Lewis and lightweight Joel “Stone” Williamson is of the highest pedigree with each boxer securing medals at last year’s championships.

Keevin Allicock got off to a winning start on Wednesday night and remains a heavy favourite to claim gold at the championships

Also present at the championships is Lawrence Assanah, a sergeant in the Guyana Defence Force.
Assanah attempted to become the third Guyanese to be certified AIBA One Star when he sat an exam on Thursday, the result of that exam will be disclosed in a subsequent article.
At least one hundred and forty boxers from fourteen countries are expected to participate in the 2017 Caribbean Development Boxing Championship which got underway at the Beausejour Indoor Facility in St Lucia on Wednesday. According to the organisers, there is expected to be a total of ninety bouts by the time the championships comes to an end on Sunday.
