Guyanese sprinters bow out of Commonwealth 100m heats

Guyana’s four 100-metre sprinters failed to advance beyond the opening round of the 2026 Commonwealth Games after competing in their respective heats in Glasgow, Scotland, on Monday.
Shamar Horatio produced the fastest time among the Guyanese men, clocking 10.43 seconds to finish third in heat five. However, his performance was not enough to secure a place in the next round.
Running from lane two, Horatio finished behind Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati, who won in a season-best 10.00s, and Jersey’s Jamie Oldham, who registered a personal-best 10.41s.

Akeem Stewart also placed third in his heat, stopping the clock at 10.55s in heat one. Nigeria’s Favour Ashe won in 10.10s, while Kenya’s Meshack Babu placed second in 10.21s.
Noelex Holder finished fourth in heat two with a time of 10.65s. Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu claimed the heat in a season-best 10.01s, ahead of Mauritius’ Orphee Topize, who clocked 10.38s, and St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Mc Kish Compton, who finished in 10.51s.
Keliza Smith, Guyana’s only competitor in the women’s 100m heats, produced a season-best 11.55s, but missed qualification after placing fourth in heat four of the women’s division.

Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Pereira won the heat in a season-best 11.24s, while Beyonce Defreitas of the British Virgin Islands was second in 11.33s. Zambia’s Edna Ng’andula claimed the third qualifying position with a personal-best 11.48s.
Later on Monday, Aaliyah Moore finished sixth in her women’s 800m heat in 2:05.54. She missed advancement, with Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi progressing as the slowest qualifier after recording 2:04.33.
Guyana’s athletics campaign will continue today when Simeon Adams and Revon Williams compete in the men’s 400m heats.
Stafon Roach is scheduled to compete in the men’s triple jump on Thursday, July 30.
