“He swerved to save 2 pedestrians”- eyewitness on Corentyne accident

…Berbice man dies after car slams into utility pole

A 28-year-old security guard lost his life on Sunday evening after the car which he was driving veered off the Corentyne highway and crashed into a utility pole at Epsom Village, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). Dead is Samuel Campbell of Liverpool Village, Corentyne. The fatal crash occurred along a section of the highway near the Evernham Bridge, where Campbell’s vehicle left the roadway before slamming into a utility pole and coming to rest in a drain beside the road. Eyewitness Randy Hope, who said he was performing watchman duties in the area at the time, recalled seeing the entire incident unfold. According to Hope, Campbell was travelling along the highway when two pedestrians suddenly entered his path after attempting to avoid an alligator that was near the bridge.

The damaged car at the scene of the accident

He explained that the driver appeared to take evasive action in an effort to avoid striking the pedestrians. “The driver of the car tried to save the two girls. They swerved from an alligator by the bridge, and after they swerved from the alligator, they came into his lane. He hit the vehicle and lost control, and ended up here,” the eyewitness stated. Hope said the car began skidding after the driver attempted to avoid the pedestrians. “The vehicle started to skid from in front by the bridge there and he skated down there and came to this pole from the side. From the side, he hit the pole, and he spun around,” he recounted.

Dead: Samuel Campbell of Liverpool Village, Corentyne

Residents and passersby rushed to the scene and pulled Campbell from the wreckage. However, Hope said the injured driver showed little sign of life. “The guys that were around here took him out,” the witness said. Meanwhile, the two pedestrians did not receive any injuries but seemed visibly shaken. The impact, nevertheless, ripped away sections of the driver’s side, crushed the roof and shattered windows. The father of two had reportedly left his mother’s home in Liverpool earlier in the day, and was allegedly imbibing with friends before deciding to go to his girlfriend’s home at Number 51 Village. It is believed that Campbell was heading there but crashed 12 villages away. Police have launched an investigation.
