“He was at the wrong place at the wrong time” – sister of dead labourer

A 19-year-old man was stabbed to death by two men who are said to be brothers, at the Perseverance Housing Scheme, East Bank of Demerara (ECD).
Dead is Owen Young, a labourer of Perseverance Housing Scheme, EBD. He was killed on Saturday evening at about 22:00h.
According to the dead man’s sister, her brother was living with his friend and his mother in Perseverance, and his friend had an issue with the two suspects. She said on Saturday night, her brother and his friend were walking to the shop when they were approached by the two men.

A heated argument had ensued between the four men, and it was reported that Young’s friend ran from the scene, leaving him at the mercy of the men who were armed with a knife.
It was then that the suspect with the knife whipped it out and stabbed Young to his right-side neck, causing him to receive injuries and collapse.
Young was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival and later taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for post-mortem examination.
The suspects turned themselves in to Police in the presence of a lawyer on Sunday. They are in custody assisting with investigations.
Wrong place at the wrong time
Meanwhile, the dead man’s sister told Guyana Times that her brother was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and he was only trying to defend his friend during the argument.
“They had some exchange of words and that’s when he got stabbed. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time…”.
The woman said Young’s death has been a shock for his family because of how sudden it occurred, and how he met his demise.
“We are taking it very hard because he did not have a problem with the guy, but, because his friend was involved in the problem, he ended up taking the brunt of it. The area was dark so probably they weren’t sure which one of them was the guy.”
“He doesn’t be in no problem, he don’t be in no confrontation with anyone and it was so shocking,” she explained.
The family is calling for a full investigation to be done into the stabbing that will lead to them having justice for the young man. (G9)
