Action set for October 7-9 at Everest Cricket Ground in G/t

The Everest Cricket Club ground at the confluence of Camp Road and Carifesta Avenue in Georgetown will again be the venue for the highly anticipated Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs’ Heritage Games.

Football action would be highly anticipated

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many from all across Guyana would be participating in these Games, set for staging from October 7-9, 2022 in celebration of Amerindian Heritage Month.

This event has quickly become a yearly tradition for all those who have ever witnessed the Heritage Games. As per tradition, all of the Games’ events will be held at the Everest ground, except the swimming events, which are usually held at the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.

Archery would be one of the main highlights

There will be three days of power-packed activities which would showcase preliminary matches in cricket, football, volleyball, archery and swimming on Friday and Saturday, October 7th and 8th respectively, paving the way for the finals to be staged on Sunday, October 9. Activities are scheduled to commence at 08:00 hrs daily.
The Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs is expecting that more than 600 sportsmen and women hailing from Indigenous villages across Guyana’s 10 administrative regions would be competing in the Games, and several cash prizes and trophies would be up for the taking.
Seeking to retain their crowns in 2022 will be Pariuma and Kako in female and male football, and Regions 1 and 7 in male and female volleyball. In cricket, the female winners were Moruca in Region 1, and runners-up Swan in Region 4. The winners for the males were Mahdia in Region 8, and the runners-up were Region 1.
In volleyball, the female winners were Moruca in Region 1, with the MVP being Annalisa Vincent; and the Runners-up were the Kanaimas of Region 4. For the males, the winners were Bartica in Region 7, with the MVP being Breyon Burnett, and the runners-up were Mainstay in Region 2.
For archery, the winners were Cadet Female U12 – Marisha Melville 1st, Aliya Melville 2nd, Anjalie Adams 3rd, Cadet Male U12 – Ravedo Kanhai 1st, Robeno Kanhai 2nd, Stephon Pearson 3rd, Youth Male U13 -17 – McLee George 1st & Bert Paul 2nd, Youth Female U13-17 – Sarah Fredericks 1st, Serena Clenkian 2nd, Beyonce Dundas 3rd. Adult Female Ausilda Paulin 1st, Rushell Dundas 2nd, Brenette Gordon 3rd; and Adult Male – Alex Pearson 1st, Jude Edwin 2nd, Aubrey DeSouza 3rd.
In addition to the headline sports, the weekend’s activities would offer a number of novelty sports, such as: piwari-drinking, hot tuma pot-eating, firewood bursting competition, lime-and-spoon race, and other traditional novelty games.
