― quarter-finals set for DCC on Sunday
The excitement in softball cricket continued last Sunday at the Malteenoes Cricket Club ground, Thomas Lands with five matches in two categories.
In the Masters match, Regal Masters led by an unbroken 109-run partnership for the fifth wicket snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Floodlights. Set 183 to win from 20 overs, Regal were reduced to 74/4 in the 10th over before achieving victory with six wickets in hand and one over to spare.
Opener Mahesh Chunilall carried his bat for 54 which included six maximums but it was Eric Thomas who took the attack to Floodlights. Thomas blasted eight towering sixes in a batting exhibition that left everyone breathless as he finished on 66 not out. Raymond Harper made 20 (2×6; 1×4) while Wayne Jones snatched 2/51 from his four overs.
When Floodlights batted, Jones top scored with an unbeaten 68 (6×6; 3×4) and added 105 runs for the third wicket with Ramesh Narine who made 61 (3×6; 4×4) while Uniss Yusuf contributed 20. Faleem Mohamed with 4/52 and David Harper 2/30 were the wicket takers to set up the exciting match which ended Floodlights participation in the tournament.
The top four teams will now contest the semi-finals which are set for the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground this Sunday. On Pitch number One at 10:00h Wellman will take on Wolf Warriors Masters while on Pitch number Two also at 10:00h Regal Masters and Fisherman Masters go at each other for a place in the semi-finals.
The afternoon fixtures will bring together Parika Defenders and HS Masters on Pitch number One at 13:00h and Superior Woods and Albion Masters will battle on Pitch number Two.
In action in the female category also on Sunday, Trophy Stall Angels completed a clean sweep after beating Wellwoman and Enterprise Divas while Blue Divas and 4R Lioness recorded one win.
Trophy Stall Angels, Wellwoman, 4R Lioness and Blue Divas have all booked their semi-final spots and will get back into action on Sunday October 23 at DCC when the semi-finals and final will be played.
The Open segment of the competition is also at the knock out stage and will culminate at DCC also on October 23.
