West Indies Captain Shai Hope has expressed confidence in his team’s preparations ahead of the first One-Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka at Sabina Park, Jamaica today, June 3, praising the squad’s focused approach during a productive training camp.
Speaking ahead of the opening match of the series, Hope said the team had embraced a detailed and purposeful preparation process aimed at strengthening their performance and maintaining their strong record at home.
“It’s been a very fruitful camp,” Hope said, “That’s what we set out to do in the beginning. Everyone’s been training with a very strong purpose. What I liked about the camp so far is that we’re paying much closer detail to what we’re trying to achieve.”

The West Indies skipper emphasised the importance of attention to detail as the team seek to establish themselves among the elite sides in international cricket.
“When you’re trying to get the best out of yourself, when you’re trying to be an elite team, that’s what you need to do. Pay very close attention to detail and ensure that all the practices that you have you’re gaining that experience and that knowledge of what needs to happen in the coming days,” he explained.
Hope noted that the intensive preparation has helped build confidence throughout the squad.
“The preparation’s been going really nicely. I think the guys are growing in confidence and it’s just about growing and building from there.”
The Captain also highlighted the team’s impressive home form, which he believed would be a significant advantage against a competitive Sri Lankan side.
The skipper highlighted, “One thing that we’ve done really well as a group, we’ve defended home court really nicely. I don’t think we’ve lost two series or so in the last few that we’ve played. The consistency that we’ve shown at home and understanding our conditions really has been going a long way for us.”
Despite the home advantage, Hope expects a stern challenge from Sri Lanka and stressed the need for continued discipline and execution.

“Sri Lanka is a very strong team, just as everyone else in the international field,” he shared, “That attention to detail that we need to pay goes a long way in terms of preparation, understanding what they’re trying to throw at us, finding ways to score as batters, and limiting that dot-ball percentage.”
Hope revealed that reducing dot balls has been a major focus for the batting unit, while the bowlers have concentrated on taking wickets consistently to keep opposition batting line-ups under pressure.
“As bowlers, trying to find ways to keep picking up wickets is crucial, because when you put batting line-ups under pressure with wickets, it’s a lot easier to control things in the back end,” he explained.
With valuable ranking points at stake, Hope said the team remained fully aware of the importance of the upcoming series.
He noted, “We have a lot to play for, especially now with the points up for grabs. The preparations are going really nicely, and it’s about understanding what’s required within the next few days against Sri Lanka.”
The three-match ODI series begins at Sabina Park today, with West Indies aiming to continue their strong home performances and make a positive start against a formidable Sri Lankan outfit.
