Horatio lands bronze in 200M event

South American Games…

Shamar Horatio copped Guyana’s first medal in Athletics at the ongoing South American Games in Argentina.
Competing in the Men’s 200M final on Thursday evening, Horatio clocked a personal best 20.53 for the bronze medal. Colombia’s Ronal Longa took the gold in 20.43s while Ecuador’s Katriel Angulo secured silver in 20.50s.
Horatio’s compatriot Tishawn Easton, did not finish the race, seemingly pulling up with an injury.

In the preliminaries on Wednesday, Heat 1saw Horatio clocking 21.03s for 4th place. Colombia’s Longa took the win in 20.83s. Over in Heat 2, Easton stopped the clock at 21.20s for second place, only bested by Ecuador’s Angulo in 20.96s.
In the distaff, Kenisha Phillips took on Heat 2, stopping the clock at 24.67s for 4th place. Ecuador’s Gabriels Suarez took the top spot in 23.86s. However, Phillips narrowly missed out on a spot in the final with the slowest qualifier clocking 24.50s.
Simeon Adams then capped off Wednesday’s performances with a 6th place finish in the men’s 400m final. Dams stopped the clock at 47.5s while Brazil’s Alison Alves took gold in 44.61s. Javier Gomez of Venezuela copped silver in 45.48s while Chile’s Martin Kouyuomdjian completed the podium in 45.99s.

Tennis
Tennis player Sachia Vickery had a debut to remember on Wednesday in the Women’s Singles Division as she recorded an unassailable win in Round 2. Vickery made the most of her bye to the second round, downing Paraguay’s Leyla Britez 2-0 (6-3, 6-3).
Then on Thursday, she replicated the performance against Chile’s Antonia Vergara, this time with a 2-1 win (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) in the Quarterfinals.

Squash
Over on the Squash courts on Wednesday, both Guyana’s men and women secured victories against Bolivia, 2-0 and 2-1 respectively in the Teams’ Round of 16.
In match one, Mary Fung-A- Fat rallied but came up short 2-3 against Andrea Fuertes (11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 6-11, 11-13). However, Kirsten Gomes levelled the contest with a 3-1 win over Michelle Arnez (11-8, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9). Then, Ashley Khalil secured the game winner with a 3-0 victory over Rebecca Valverde 11-5, 11-4, 11-6.
The men followed with Daniel Ince recording a 3-0 win over Gabriel Torrez (11-9, 11-4, 11-8). Nicholas Verwey then sealed the deal with another 3-0 win over Alvin Rios (11-2, 11-6, 11-8).
However, neither team could replicate their success on Thursday in the Quarterfinals. The men went down 0-3 to Peru while the women were ousted from the competition by Colombia, by an identical margin.
In the men’s quarters, Verwey went down to Thiago Cabrejos 0-3 (8-11, 3-11, 1-11). Ince fell to Alonso Escudero 0-3 (5-11, 6-11, 1-11) while Rafael Galvez got the better of Ince- Carvalhal 2-0 (11-2, 11-4).
For the women, Kirsten Gomes opened with a 0-3 loss to Andrea Soria (5-11, 3-11, 3-11). Lucia Bautista overcame Fung- A- Fat 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-6). Khalil fought back in the third match but fell short 1-2 to Maria Tovar. Khalil won the first set 11-7 before Tovar prevailed 11-8, 11-3 in the following sets.
