Husband dies, wife critical after horrific Berbice accident
A husband has died and his wife is in critical condition following an accident east of the Berbice River Bridge road on Thursday.
Dead is 33-year-old Vijay Jaigobin, a goldsmith of Lot 2 C Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice). Injured is 30-year-old Sherry Alica Jaigobin. The injured woman is in critical condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Up to press time, doctors at the hospital had been trying to stabilise the housewife to prepare her for transfer to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Reports are that the accident occurred about 17:45h.
According to the Police, motor car PYY 6586, driven by the goldsmith, was proceeding west on the southern side of the Berbice Bridge road at a fast pace. Police stated that the driver lost control and ran into a concrete culvert, on the northern side of the road and ended up in a nearby trench on the said side of the road. As a result, the driver and his wife received severe injuries. Public-spirited persons rushed to their assistance and they were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. However, the husband was pronounced dead on arrival.
At the New Amsterdam Hospital on Thursday evening, the couple’s three children were trying to come to grips with the sudden change to their lives.
Guyana Times understands that the couple were heading home when the accident occurred.
Police have since launched an investigation. (G4)
