An illegal firearm was discovered on Monday during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Regional Division Nine (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo), resulting in the arrest of a 19-year-old. Reports are that the operation took place between 15:45h and 16:45h at a ranch located along the Hiawa Access Road, Central Rupununi. According to Police, ranks acted on intelligence received and proceeded to the location where three males were contacted and subjected to searches. During the exercise, a hammock in which one of the men was lying was searched, leading to the discovery of a firearm.
“One Glock 26 9mm pistol, along with one empty magazine, was found,” Police stated. The 19-year-old suspect, a mechanic/porter of South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, was arrested. He was escorted to the Lethem Police Station along with the firearm, which was lodged as evidence pending further investigation.
The suspect remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
