An inquest has begun into the death of 18-year-old Rainella Benfield whose lifeless body was found in a cemetery at Triumph, East Coast Demerara, on December 11, 2017.
At the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Friday last, relatives and friends of the dead teen were summoned to testify.
During the proceedings, four persons gave evidence as the matter was heard before Magistrate Alicia George.
The matter will be called again on March 12 when it is expected that more persons will take the stand.
The body of Benfield, who resided at Lot 99 Canterbury Walk, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was discovered with her hands resting on her chest while the pair of jeans she was wearing was pulled to her knees.
It was reported that the teen left home for work and after she did not return home in the evening, her relatives were under the impression that she was working overtime. However, on December 11, 2017, she was found dead in the Triumph cemetery.
It is suspected that she was killed one week prior to the discovery. Following the discovery, persons recounted hearing screams in the vicinity of the cemetery but did not pay heed.
A male friend of the dead girl had said that she had planned to spend the night out with a group of friends at Mahaicony but it never materialised since the friend had to work late.
