As Russians in Guyana gathered at the Russian Embassy, Kitty, Georgetown, on Wednesday evening to celebrate Russia’s National Day, the Head of State, President David Granger, called for strengthened relations with the country in areas of investments and educational qualifications.
“Guyana looks forward to strengthening its relations with Russia and particularly to the successful conclusion to agreements relating to investments and a mutual recognition of educational qualification…we will continue to collaborate on a multilateral level with Russia in pursuing our common interests” the President assured the Russian diplomats.
According to Granger, over the past 50 years, Guyana and Russia have enjoyed and seeks to maintain their good relations of peace and security.
This, the President noted, is as a result of Russia’s continued support in areas such as debt relief, disaster relief etc.
“Guyana iterates its appreciation for Russia’s support in debt relief and disaster relief. Our relations have been advanced through the treaty and basic relations between the Government of Guyana and the Government of the Russian Federation and agreement pertaining to visa requirements, through the agreement of combating illicit trade of narcotics and other substances and through work of the joint working group in the field of geology and subsoil management” Granger added.
Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Guyana, Alexander Kurmaz, who expressed similar sentiments, noted that Guyana shares common approaches with Russia to a number of global issues.
Coupled with this, the Ambassador noted that good relations are maintained through the non-interference of the affairs of the respective countries.
“Russia and Guyana have enjoyed friendly cordial relations since unofficially a century but through establishing diplomatic relations in the year 1970. These relations are based on the principles of mutual respect and non-interference into each other’s affairs. We share common approaches to a number of issues on the global agenda and are looking forward to expanding our cooperation, not only on a bilateral level but also within international mechanisms” Kurmaz stated.
On Russia Day, celebrated on June 12 annually, the country traditionally holds holiday concerts, mass open-air celebrations and sports events.
The holiday was celebrated for the first time in 1995 after the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Soviet Federative Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR, part of the Soviet Union) adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR.
Since 2001, Russia Day has been celebrated with fireworks in Moscow and in other cities around the country.
