As the final witness took the stand on Friday to offer evidence in the ongoing murder trial of Andre Alexander called “Breadman”, the two accused namely: 22-year-old Shaquille Grant, called “Soldier Man” and Neville Ford are expected to know their fates on Monday.
At the High Court on Friday, both defence and state counsels made their respective submissions to trial Judge Justice Navindra Singh, who afterwards adjourned the matter until June 17, 2019, for the case ruling where the 12-member jury is expected to deliver a verdict after considering evidence given during the trial.
The trial’s commencement on Wednesday saw the wife of the deceased, Beverley Alexander, testifying as a key witness since, at the time of the incident, she was with her now dead husband, thereby witnessing almost everything when he was shot and killed.
The final witness, Gladwin Greeves, in the continuation of his testimony under cross-examination by Defence Attorney Nigel Hughes, denied that he had recognised the number one accused, while further denying that he signed any statements taken by police officers.
Greeves, who began testifying on Thursday, had also witnessed “Breadman” being shot by the pillion rider on a motorcycle, whom he previously told the court he had recognised, however, Greeves denied saying same in court on Friday.
The two accused are being represented by Attorney Nigel Hughes in association with Ashley Henry and Adrian Thompson while the State’s case is being led by Prosecutor Teriq Mohammed, in association with Sarah Martin and Tuanna Hardy.
According to media reports at the time, Alexander, of Lot 394 C Field, Sophia, and his wife were at their bread stand when two men on a CG motorcycle rode up and ordered three loaves of bread, paying with a $5000 note.
The now dead man was reportedly in the process of making change when the pillion rider whipped out a gun and demanded that the father of two hand over his cash.
Alexander reportedly put up a fight and in retaliation, the suspect discharged two rounds, one of which struck the vendor to the chest.
The bandits then relieved the injured man of an undisclosed sum of cash and loaves of bread before making good their escape.
Residents rushed to the scene and found the man lying in a pool of blood. He was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he succumbed while receiving medical attention.
