64 students complete GBTI’s 2026 Work Study Programme

– urged to carry knowledge, skills & values gained

Some 64 students from schools across Guyana have successfully completed the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Limited (GBTI) 2026 Work Study Programme, which was aimed at equipping them with the much-needed practical work experience as they enter the Guyanese workforce.
The students were celebrated with a graduation ceremony that provided an opportunity for them to reflect on their experiences and accomplishments while receiving certificates of completion and tokens of appreciation in recognition of their commitment and contributions throughout the programme. Over the six-week period, students were placed across GBTI’s Head Office and branches nationwide, including locations in Lethem, Port Kaituma and Anna Regina. They were assigned to various departments across the bank, giving them the opportunity to experience different aspects of the banking industry and gain insight into the operations of a professional organisation. The programme was designed to help students bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace by providing practical exposure to professional environments. Throughout their placements, students gained valuable experience in areas including customer service, communication, teamwork, time management, workplace etiquette, responsibility and problem-solving.
Beyond technical exposure, the Work Study Programme encouraged students to develop the soft skills and professional attitudes that are essential for success in today’s workforce. Working alongside GBTI employees also allowed students to learn directly from experienced professionals and gain a better understanding of workplace expectations. For many of the participants, the programme represented their first opportunity to experience a formal workplace environment. The experience allowed them to see how academic knowledge can be applied in real-world situations while also giving them the opportunity to explore potential career paths. The programme’s reach across Guyana also allowed GBTI to extend this opportunity to students outside of Georgetown, with participants gaining experience at branches serving communities in Lethem, Port Kaituma and Anna Regina. GBTI views programmes such as the Work Study Programme as an important part of its commitment to youth development. By exposing students to the realities of the workplace at an early stage, the Bank aims to help young people build confidence, develop professional skills and better prepare for their future careers. Chief Operations Officer (COO) Rawattie Mohandeo stated, “Congratulations to our 64 graduates on successfully completing the GBTI Work Study Programme. Your dedication, hard work and willingness to learn have been commendable. As you move forward into your studies and careers, we encourage you to carry with you the knowledge, skills and values gained during your time with GBTI. We wish each of you every success in the journey ahead.” The bank also acknowledged the GBTI employees who served as supervisors, mentors and colleagues to the students throughout the programme, sharing their knowledge and helping to create a meaningful learning experience. As the 64 graduates take the next step in their journeys, GBTI hopes that the experience gained through the Work Study Programme will serve as more than a six-week introduction to the workplace; but as a foundation upon which they can build successful careers and contribute meaningfully to Guyana’s future.
