John powers to victory in AC Marriott road race

Briton John reinforced his status as Guyana’s leading cyclist by winning the Open Division of the AC Marriott Carlton Wheelers Cycling Club Road Race on Sunday.
John, representing WSU, emerged ahead of a large field of local cyclists after the race got underway after 07:30h, 10 minutes after its scheduled start. Robin Persaud of AC Marriott Carlton Wheelers finished second, while Kaieteur Attack Racing Cycle Club’s Alex Mendes secured third place.
KFC Evolution rider Segun Hubbard placed fourth, followed by Kaieteur Attack Racing Cycle Club’s Andre Green in fifth and KFC Evolution’s Aaron Newton in sixth.

The open competitors completed eight laps of a circuit which started outside AC Marriott. The riders travelled north to the Ogle Airport stoplight, turned south and continued to the U-turn on the Ogle-to-East Bank bypass road before returning to the starting point.
Persaud also produced a strong performance in the Masters 35-and-over category, taking first place ahead of Mendes and Hubbard.
Alexander Leung of Continental Cycle Club won the junior division, while Tandeia Noel led a one-two finish for Kaieteur Attack Racing Cycle Club in the female race. Her teammate Rebecca Damon placed second.
The female riders completed two laps of the circuit, while the juniors were scheduled to contest eight laps.
Ian Jackson of Flying Stars captured the Masters 50-and-over title after four laps. WSU’s Nigel London finished second, while KFC Evolution’s Mark Spencer placed third.

In Category Four, Julio Melville of Kaieteur Attack Racing Cycle Club claimed the top position ahead of AC Marriott Carlton Wheelers’ Collis Williams and clubmate Kevin Edwards. The Category Four riders also contested eight laps.
The race carried a total prize purse of $376,000, including $21,000 for six sprint prizes valued at $3500 each. The Open winner received $40,000, with prizes of $35,000, $30,000, $25,000, $20,000 and $15,000 awarded from second to sixth place.
The top three riders in the Masters, Category Four and junior divisions also received cash prizes, while the leading two female competitors earned $10,000 and $8000 respectively.
AC Marriott sponsored the event and is also the official sponsor of Carlton Wheelers Cycling Club.
