Gajnabi shines as women lead exciting Trophy Stall Golf Challenge

West Indies and Guyana Amazon Warriors cricketer Shabika Gajnabi showed her versatility by producing an impressive performance at the Trophy Stall Westside Golf Course 2026 Golf Challenge on Saturday.
Gajnabi was among dozens of newcomers who competed across the men’s, women’s and junior divisions during an event that highlighted the expanding interest in golf across Guyana.
The national cricketer challenged strongly for the women’s long drive title, but was edged into second place by Rose Samaroo following a closely-contested play-off. Navika Narine finished third.
The women’s division provided some of the most exciting action of the tournament, with several play-offs needed before the winners could be confirmed.
Shavana Ramlakan topped the women’s nearest-to-the-pin category, ahead of Annusha Singh and Naiyeli Budburgh.

Yosiel Pinero Cordero was the leading performer in the men’s division after winning both the long drive and nearest-to-the-pin competitions.
Dave “ER Small Engines” Ramroop and Tony Affonso completed the top three in the men’s long drive, while Afrwaz Baksh and Davenand Ramroop placed second and third respectively in the nearest-to-the-pin contest.
Among the juniors, Ian Anup won the long drive competition ahead of Ethan Ramroop. Fazzan Affonso secured first place in the nearest-to-the-pin event, with Ramroop again finishing second.
A large gathering of spectators attended the challenge and offered strong support to the competitors throughout the day.
Former Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton and popular YouTuber Too Cool were also present. They joined spectators in cheering on the golfers before assisting with the presentation of trophies and prizes.
Guyana Golf Association President Aleem Hussain praised Trophy Stall proprietor Ramesh Sunich for his longstanding contribution to the development of the sport.
Hussain said the company’s support for community competitions and grassroots programmes has helped introduce hundreds of people to golf.
He congratulated the participants and encouraged the newcomers to attend the regular coaching sessions and competitions at the Westside Golf Course to further improve their skills.
Organisers are expected to announce the next Westside Novice Golf Challenge shortly.
