Junior karatekas shine in Suriname

A four-member team of karatekas, spearheaded by Inspector Keith Beaton from the Guyana Karate Federation, left Guyana to compete in the 3rd Caribbean Karate Championships in Paramaribo Suriname.

According to the GKF release, the junior karatekas had much success. Shemar Parkinson, 3rd Kyu, won silver in the 16-17 years 76+ kg division in Kumite; while Trevon Miller, 2nd Dan, took the bronze medal in the 16-17 years 76 kg division in Kumite. Shakeem Walcott, 2nd Dan, won a bronze medal in the 14-15 years 57 kg division in Kumite, and another bronze in the 14-15 years’ Individual Kata.
Parkinson and Miller took bronze in the 16-17 years Team Kumite, and together with Walcott, took the silver medal in the 14-17 years Team Kata.
The Guyana Team overall won a total of nine (9) medals – four (4) Silver and five (5) Bronze Medals
The Team was responsible for its own financing in Suriname, but expressed special thanks to Gajendra Oedayrajsingh-Varma, who assisted them with accommodation, meals and transportation.
