Joshua Kalekyezi defeated his counterpart Viraj Sharma to lift the Boys U-14 title in the Sheltez/ Homesafe Security Independence cup on Saturday at the Harry Panday Court, Bel Air.
He emerged victor after dropping the second set but holding on for the tie breaker. The scores read 4-1 2-4 16-14 in favour of Kalekyezi, who said it was a good feeling to top the tournament after entering as the number three seed.
“It’s a good feeling to know that I was rated number three from the start but I was unaware of that up until now, however, I was very confident and that helped me top the tournament.”

The 13 year-old said it was an important win as he prepares for Guyana’s Premier Tennis Challenge, the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) tournament.
Meanwhile, Sharma who is good with his serves, rallies and coolness on the court said his strength was off at the wrong time in what was a tiring encounter.
The pair will meet again today in hope to produce an exciting boys u-18 final.
