Kato Hospital not functioning for past 8 months

The Kato Cottage Hospital in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), which serves the village and surrounding communities, has not been functioning to full capacity over the last eight months.

Regional authorities and residents made the complaint once again to a ministerial delegation, which visited the area last weekend.

The team comprised Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson; Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Minister Sydney Allicock; Education Minister, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, and Social Cohesion Minister, Dr George Norton, along with their technical staff.

Residents in the area informed Guyana Times that the health institution was unable to function fully, because the solar panel system which powered the facility has been broken.

A health-care officer explained that as a result, the hospital was not powered and certain critical services could not be offered.

The health-care worker also said the institution was unable to store vaccines.

Nonetheless, residents can still access certain regular clinics throughout the day.

According to information reaching Guyana Times, complaints have been made previously to the respective authorities, but so far no efforts have been made to correct the deficiencies in order to get the health institution up and running again.

Efforts to contact Public Health Ministers Volda Lawrence and Dr Karen Cummings as well as Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Minister Sydney Allicock on Tuesday for a comment on the issue proved futile.
