Kitty Weavers produced a stunning upset win over Leopold Street to qualify for the quarterfinal in the Ministry of Health/Petra Organisation Soft Shoe Championship.
Playing at the Ministry of Education ground on Saturday, Kitty’s 3-2 win over their formidable opponents was lead by Leon Grumble double, notching goals in the 9th and 23rd minute while Nigel Denny netted in the seventh minute; on target in the loss were Akeem Rajkumar and Mark Lawrence in the first and third minute.
Leopold Street was not the only side to suffer a shocking loss; Sophia secured the biggest upset of the elimination round, downing last year’s losing finalist West Front Road 3-1. Sophia took the lead in the fourth minute as Dwayne Lowe scored but Desmond Cottam made it 2-0 in the seventh minute. West Front Road eventually got on the score sheet via an own goal in the 17th minute; Sophia sealed the famous win in the 21st minute as Lowe recorded his second goal.
North East La Penitence edged Holmes Street Tiger Bay 2-1 through goals from Alwin Moore and Shaquille Brown in the 14th and 33rd minute. On target in the loss was Jahaal Greaves in the 19th minute.
In the final result of the night, Queen Street Tiger Bay squeaked past Alexander Village 1-0 compliments of a Leon Fredericks strike in the 23rd minute.
The event will resume on 10 July at the same venue with the quarterfinal stage kicking-off.
Winner of the event will collect $300,000 and the Championship trophy while the second-placed side will receive $200,000 and the runners-up accolade.
On the other hand, the third-placed side will receive $100,000 and the respective trophy while the fourth-place finishers will pocket $50,000 and the corresponding title.
