Several residents of Kwakwani in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) on Friday took to the streets to protest the poor quality of water and electricity supply in the area. Guyana Times understands that the residents stood in front of the Kwakwani Utilities Inc (KUI), Kwakwani Park Office, attempting get the attention of a senior representative, to address the ongoing issues affecting them.
The villagers have long been complaining about the poor quality of water they receive as well as the constant fluctuation in power supply. According to one of the protesters, a member of KUI’s Board engaged them and in the end referred to them as “jackasses” for protesting.

transformer exploded around 20:00h on Thursday evening.

One disgruntled resident, Anita Singh, who said she called the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) one month prior to the explosion, to complain of load shedding among others problems being experienced, noted that the company never visited to address the situation.
According to her, she reported the issue to GPL some one month back after she observed sparks on the transformer, which is just to the head of her street.
The woman complained, “I’ve made several calls to GPL but they refused to come and have a look at it, however last night (Thursday) at just around eight o’clock or just before they had an explosion which left us without power for the entire night”.
Singh added that she was worried about her meat in her refrigerator since she has suffered losses due to similar cases before with the power company. She even noted how affected her two children were during the entire night, although they were expected to go to school the following day.
A senior citizen in another street who was also affected noted how scared she was since the crime rate in the area has been increasing. That resident said she was not only without power, but without phone lines and felt helpless.
