Labourer critical after being struck by speeding car

A man is now in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was struck by an allegedly drunken motorist on Monday evening along the Peters’ Hall Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
The injured man was identified as 27-year-old Kwason Lewis of Lot 441 Section D Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown.
Based on information received, the now injured man and other workers attached to a waste disposal company were cleaning up the debris along the roadway when a speeding motor car bearing registration number PWW 9187 swerved from hitting an object and struck the labourer.
He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted.
At the time of the accident, the workers were all wearing reflective vests. The 29-year-old driver of Perseverance, Providence, East Bank Demerara, who was found to be over the limit of alcohol consumption was arrested and was currently assisting with the investigations.
Only on Sunday, 15-year-old Karamchand Khemraj was killed after he and a friend, Reaz Shaw, were struck by a speeding minibus along the Annandale Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
Khemraj died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Shaw, on the other hand, was admitted in critical condition to the ICU.
Up to late Tuesday evening, the minibus that caused the accident was yet to be located, but the Police are making every effort to do same. Sixteen-year-old Shaw remains in the medical facility.
