Labourer remanded for attempted murder of NA vendor

A 34-year-old labourer was on Monday remanded to prison after being charged with the attempted murder of a New Amsterdam vendor, who was allegedly struck with a glass bottle and chopped to the head during an attack in August.
Ravindra Samaroo, of Ogleton Dam, Angoys Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.
He was not required to plead and was remanded to prison until November 27, when the matter is scheduled to be called for a report.
The charge stems from an incident on August 19, involving 52-year-old Steve King, called “Greensman,” a vendor of Ogleton Dam.
According to police investigations, King was riding his bicycle along Ogleton Dam, heading home, when he encountered Samaroo, with whom he reportedly had an ongoing dispute that had previously been brought to the attention of the police.
Samaroo allegedly struck King on the right side of his head with a Guinness bottle before pulling a cutlass from his waist and chopping him to the head.

Remanded: Ravindra Samaroo

King reportedly lost consciousness and later awoke at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he had been admitted for treatment.
He also reported that $100,000 he had been carrying in his right pants pocket was missing following the attack.
Police said another resident, 45-year-old Amzad Kubir, called “Crabman,” a labourer of Ogleton Dam, was also allegedly attacked that day.
Kubir told investigators that he was at home consuming alcohol when Samaroo, entered his yard and chopped him on the left hand and head before fleeing. He said that he too had an ongoing dispute with Samaroo.
Kubir received medical treatment and was subsequently discharged.
Following investigations, Samaroo was arrested and charged with attempting to commit murder, contrary to Section 103(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.
