Lawrence Singh: Gloria’s Poultry Farm

Poultry rearing was not initially on the cards for accountant Lawrence Singh, owner of Gloria’s Poultry Farm at Marudi Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway. Requiring a means of supplementing his income, he ventured into this type of farming on a small scale.

Singh and his wife, Gloria (after whom the farm is named), are two very friendly, kind and passionate young people who have not only sought to start their own business, but have been providing eggs for their local neighbourhood shops and a wide clientele for the past four years.

However, with increased demand for his product, his location and facilities needed to be improved. Capital was needed and a chance radio advertisement sent him to the Small Business Bureau (tel #225-3276/227-1439). This was the beginning of a relationship geared towards the growth of Gloria’s Poultry Farm.

Singh noted that he attempted access to loans through several organisations, but the interest rate was enormous. However, through the Bureau, he was able receive financing to expand his poultry housing facilities and purchase new livestock. In order to access the financing, Singh was encouraged to prepare a business plan, which was not only a requirement for the bank, but also aided in the daily management and operations of his business.

The business plan also aided in Singh’s creative ability being utilised to find innovative ways to enhance his farm, as well as ensure maximum yields. Cleanliness is on the forefront of this entrepreneur’s regimen as his poultry facilities are kept clean and free of odour. Market research is also a priority for the management of this business, as they seek to maintain quality standards, while maximising their yields.

Singh is only 27 years old, but has a successful business, for which he is continuously thinking of means to expand. He noted: “It is very encouraging to see young people becoming entrepreneurs and successfully managing these businesses with assistance from the Small Business Bureau.” Contact: Gloria’s Poultry Farm, Marudi Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway; 619-2460
