Residents of Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast have expressed frustration with the condition of the main access road and are calling on Government to quickly do something to bring some relief to the community. According to residents, the deplorable state of the road has caused significant damage to vehicles, which are often stuck due to the many potholes and slushy surface.

When contacted, Regional Chairman Devanand Ramdatt said he shares the concerns of the Lima Sands residents and is presently doing some maintenance work by grading the surface of the road. As Chairman of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), he said the Council was never informed of the Lima Sands Road Project, which was done directly through the Public Infrastructure Ministry. He noted that the Ministry conducted the road project through the Regional Executive Office without the knowledge of the RCD. He added that the Council has expressed their disappointment with the poor design of the road. According to the Chairman, Councillors and residents were not consulted on the project and residents feels that while they wish to have a good road, the entire project is a waste of taxpayers’ monies due to the poor design.
Tulsie Chattergoon, a minibus driver working in the area for over 22 years, said the new road will not stand up because of its design.
“The engineers should consult with the residents before designing the road because of the nature of the soil (sandy) you can’t build a narrow, high road without good shoulders and drainage. That is why the present design is falling apart,” another resident noted.
