Linden drive-by shooting: “Pastor” remanded on murder charge
Samorea Mitchell, 26, who is charged with the murder of Delroy McKenzie, who was killed in a drive-by shooting at Linden Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), was remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
Mitchell called “Pastor” of Lot 716 Phase 1 “B” Wisroc, Linden, was not required to plead to the indictable charge for the capital offence of murder which was read to him on Friday. His lawyer is Dexter Todd.
The drive-by shooting, which occurred on July 17, left 23-year-old McKenzie dead, while his friend Calvin Daly was injured.
McKenzie, who hailed from Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown, was riddled with bullets on the day in question at Sunflower Street, Wismar in Linden. It was reported that the two friends had left Georgetown for Linden via public transportation to visit a female friend of McKenzie.
While in Linden, the men stopped at Church’s Chicken to purchase a meal. While at the location, Daly said McKenzie was given directions from his female friend via telephone to join a boat at the Mackenzie shore. On arrival there, the man called the friend for further directions.
But after a short while, the female called him back and told him to turn around since she would be sending a car to pick them up. As they walked out of Sunflower Street, they saw a silver wagon car turning around and as McKenzie approached the car to open the back door, a man opened the door and shot at him.
Another male came out of the front passenger seat and opened fire too.
Daly reportedly ran for cover, and the car, which had three male occupants, drove in a southern direction towards Silver City Street. McKenzie was shot nine times, according to an autopsy.
Sometime later, the motor car that was involved in the drive-by shooting was found torched at Blue Water Lake, Kara Kara, Linden. Police ranks on patrol were at Blue Water Lake when they observed a fully burnt silver-grey Fielder wagon on the southern side of Blue Lake Access Road.
The case will continue on October 8. (G1)
