Linden driver on $410,000 bail over Rupununi fatal crash

An Amelia’s Ward, Linden minibus driver was on Thursday granted bail in the sum of $410,000 for causing the death of Orin Davis during an incident along the Toka Trail Road, North Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), on Monday.
He was also slapped with other traffic-related charges.
Police stated that Lester Baker, 54, was driving minibus BAL 8894 in a dangerous manner, thereby causing the death of Davis, who was, at the time, driving motorcycle CP 3638.
At the time of the accident, Police stated that the minibus was uninsured, and Baker refused to consent to a breathalyser test.
However, he appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to the charges of causing death by dangerous driving and operating an uninsured motor vehicle and was granted $410,000 bail.
In addition, he pleaded guilty to refusing to take a breathalyser test and was fined $20,000.
The matters were adjourned to July 13, 2026. As a condition of bail, Baker is required to report every Friday to the Police until the determination of the matter. Police stated that on May 11, 2026, at about 20:00h, Baker collided with the motorcyclist along the Toka Trail, North Rupununi.
As a result of the collision, Davis sustained injuries and was subsequently pronounced dead. A 34-year-old female of Annai Village, North Rupununi, who was the pillion rider, also sustained injuries but remains in stable condition.
