Linden pensioner killed in early-morning accident

A 78-year-old woman of West Watooka, Linden was killed early Sunday morning after she was reportedly struck down by a speeding car on her way to church.
Dead is Juliet Cornelius of Lot 55 West Watooka, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice). The accident occurred at approximately 07:15h on Burnham Drive, Wismar.

The driver of the car involved in the accident, 27-year-old Corwin Cooper, of Powis Crescent, Amelia’s Ward, Linden, has since been taken into Police custody and has been assisting with the investigation.
According to information received, a motor car bearing registration number PVV 2251 which was driven by Cooper, was proceeding South along the eastern side of the road at a fast pace and while negotiating a left turn, the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle and ended up on the southern parapet.
There, he reportedly struck Cornelius who was walking. As a result of the collision, the woman fell onto the roadway and sustained severe injuries about her body.
She was picked up by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC), where she was examined by a doctor on duty who admitted her.
The woman subsequently died while receiving treatment at the medical institution.
Her body is presently at the LHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver proved that he was over the prescribed limit of alcohol consumption.
He was later placed into custody and his vehicle impounded. Investigations are ongoing.
