Residents of Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) were recently treated to a free health and wellness fair, organised by the Health and Relief Organisation (HERO) in collaboration with the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC).
The activity which was hosted at the Amelia’s Ward bus park at Mackenzie saw scores of residents benefiting from medical services by the US-based organisation, headed by Dr Collie Oudkerk.
Speaking on behalf of Oudkerk, Pharmacist Susana Gim explained that the activity is conducted by a team which makes biannual visits to Linden and Georgetown.
“We usually do a health fair just to do blood pressure screening, blood sugar screening and cholesterol screening just to refer them to clinics and just to provide healthcare to person that have a hard time getting to it,” Gim explained.
Patients who received less than favourable results were referred to one of three community health centres for further medical checkups.
“We are around 15 people. We usually have a mixture of physicians, physicians’ assistants, nurse practitioners”.
The HERO programme was initiated in 2000 and has since received an overwhelming response from members of the Linden community.
