The Linden Highway was ignited with a stellar performance from promising cyclist Mark Lewis Jr, who showed off his chops to take the lion’s share of prizes in a cycling race hosted in honour of Linden’s former national cyclist and United States-based James “Joelyn” Joseph. The race covered the Linden Highway, but it concluded before the round-about at Millie’s Hideout on Saturday.
In placing first, Lewis Jr carted off the majority of the sprint prizes in the 34-mile event, winning nine of the 10 on offer, with Joseph who was second, copping the other.
Organised by Nigel London, a Linden veteran cyclist who incidentally is the head of the governing Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), the race was used to showcase the talents of Linden’s cycling community, with only riders from the mining town contesting the race. This practice was in keeping with many other sporting events which were held during the Linden Town Week celebrations for the town’s 56th anniversary.
