A lone gunman on Friday morning terrorised and robbed a Corneila Ida, West Coast Demerara family of close to $800,000 in cash and other valuables, before escaping in a car belonging to the family.
Jenny Bacchus, 42, told Guyana Times she and her 12-year-old daughter were at home when the tall, fair-skinned man barged into her home. She recalled that at the time she was speaking with her cousin on the telephone, and out of fear, she dropped the device.
The perpetrator then told her if she complied he would not hurt her, but at the same time, he pointed a gun at them and began to tie them up with the phone cable.
The woman said the perpetrator then ransacked the house. She said she attempted to get a glimpse of his face, but could not, since he had a hat pulled in his face.
Whilst the perpetrator was searching the home, Bacchus’s cousin turned up to check on her and her child. He, too, was bound, and was subsequently relieved of his mobile phone and the jewellery he was wearing.
The perpetrator then escaped with the car belonging to Bacchus’s cousin, a Toyota 212, which was later recovered in the vicinity of the Den Amstel Police Station.
A report was made at the Leonora Police Station, and an investigation has been launched. No arrest has as yet been made.
