Lusignan Prison escapee recaptured

Police have recaptured Lusignan Prison escapee Adrian Damder, ending a manhunt that began after he fled the correctional facility earlier this month.
Damder, 34, of Graham Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was arrested during an operation at Goedverwagting, ECD, at about 00:20h on Saturday.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), ranks acted on information received and went to the location where they contacted and arrested the escapee. He is currently in custody at the Sparendaam Police Station as investigations continue.
Damder had escaped from the Lusignan Prison sometime between 08:00h and 16:00h on May 17. At the time of his escape, a manhunt was launched by law enforcement ranks and the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), which had appealed to the public for assistance in locating him.
Damder had been on remand since January 14, 2026, on two counts of threatening language. He was accused of threatening to harm his father. Reports indicate that on the day of the escape, Damder had completed taking a bath and requested permission from a prison officer to hang his towel in the sun. He was reportedly allowed into the prison compound unsupervised and allegedly used the opportunity to scale a fence before making his way behind the new female prison facility currently under construction.
Investigators believe he then climbed a second fence, gaining access to a dump site from where he escaped. Prison officials reportedly only became aware of his disappearance during a roll call later that evening. Following the incident, the GPS launched an internal investigation. Several prison officers were reportedly placed under close arrest and questioned as part of the probe into the circumstances surrounding the escape. In April 2024, Keon Webster and Kareem Douglas escaped while being transported to Lusignan Prison. The pair, who were reportedly handcuffed together, fled after jumping from a prison vehicle as it arrived at the facility. Both men were subsequently recaptured in the Stabroek Market area.
Similarly, in April 2022, Keanon Harry and Kevin Velladares escaped from a Guyana Prison Service vehicle while being transported from Linden to Lusignan Prison. Velladares later turned himself in at the Brickdam Police Station, while Harry surrendered at the Leonora Police Station one day later.
