
Two Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu Upper Essequibo) men were fined after pleading guilty to separate charges of driving while their breath alcohol levels exceeded the legal limit. Fitzpatrick Raphael, a motorcyclist of Moco-Moco Village, and George Gildarie, a motor lorry driver of Lethem, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Both men were charged under Section 39(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, which prohibits operating a motor vehicle while the level of alcohol in a person’s system exceeds the allowed legal limit. During the court proceedings, the charges were read; they both pleaded guilty. Following their admissions, Magistrate Chandan imposed a fine of $50,000 on each offender. In default of payment, they will serve five weeks’ imprisonment.
